July 2,1937 - Amelia Earharts last known transmission to the United States Coast Guard Cutter Itasca.
As the world learns beloved aviatrix Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan have gone missing somewhere over the Central Pacific Ocean, they wait for news. Though information is slow coming, the search is just winding up. The United States Navy launches the largest search and rescue for this pair of civilian aviators up to that time. Covering an estimated two hundred thousand square nautical miles of ocean, with many islands, atolls and reefs. To no avail.
Reports of multiple distress calls from civilian radio operators start coming in. Though after reviewing one at a time, only some are considered credible enough for further investigation. But in the end, none bear fruit!
